Just because you’re not feeling as excited about or focused on your writing as you’re used to doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to give it up forever. It might simply be time to step away from it long enough to let yourself start to miss it.
Writing Is More Draining Than You Think
Consider that it’s not the writing itself you’ve lost interest in, but rather, the act of pushing yourself to create something new when it’s all you can do to remember to eat three meals and feed your cats.
It’s possible you’re exhausted. Mentally, physically, emotionally. And it’s likely that exhaustion that’s making every writing session — if you even manage to attempt them — feel like a chore you can no longer stand.
Sometimes Life Gets in the Way — Or Changes Your Perspective
It took until adulthood got complicated for me to truly understand that you can’t simply push through everything just for the sake of writing. When you don’t have the energy to spare to write, it’s the universe trying to tell you that maybe taking a step back from it is your best option for the moment.
You’ll be much better off for it. There is a time to force yourself to get the work done and a time to focus on getting your life together. And sometimes, doing the latter can make you think deeper about the meaning writing holds for you, and how much space you still want to give it in your everyday life.
If It’s Meant to Be, You Will Find Your Way Back to It
You will always return to writing if you truly feel you’re meant to tell stories. This isn’t just something I believe; it’s something I’ve experienced time and again. No matter how long I may have had to walk away from writing so I could clear my head, I’ve always come back to it. It really calls to me. I start to miss it. I start to crave it.
The same will be true for you. If it’s not meant to be, your interest in writing will fade, and you’ll find your way to things that fulfill you and your purpose in ways writing can’t. But if writing is still your passion, you’ll return to it. Because it won’t let you stay away for long. Just long enough.
