Broadcast Yourself…If You’re Good Enough

That whole thing I mentioned yesterday, about doing absolutely nothing from sun-up to sunset? Yeah, didn’t exactly happen that way.

I got plenty of writing done (and when I say plenty, I mean roughly 3,000 words) over the course of the day, which was both good for my brain and good for my sanity, since I literally get deeply and uncurably depressed if I go even a day without writing something. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Twitter update or ten pages of journal-only venting. I have to write or type something.

Happy 4th of July, everybody! It doesn’t even feel like a holiday. It feels to me more like a Saturday. There are clouds all over, I have this really bad feeling that it’s cold outside, and I think I’m all alone. Minus my cat, who cat-barfed all over the floor last night because he found the cat nip while playing in the garden. Which brings me, ever so conviniently, to what else I did yesterday.

For the first time in like…forever…I helped my mother weed in the garden. It wasn’t as terrible as it sounds. All I had to do was pick the green plants growing out of the woodchips. There were, however, BILLIONS and TRILLIONS of them. So I spent fifteen to thirty minutes squatting on the ground, attacking the woodchips with my fingers. I have to say, I was pretty proud of myself when I was finished. I got that same sense of accomplishment I get whenever I finish a novel. Which hasn’t happened since…November.

I was thinking about something yesterday that made me stop everything I was doing because it’s such a good question: why do people post videos of themselves singing on YouTube?

I guess it’s for the same reason they post vlogs: they want people to see their faces. It makes them feel famous, in a way, to know that people all over the world are watching them do something they think they’re good at (or, in some rare cases, actually ARE good at). They have some sort of hope that they’ll become as famous as Fred, or all the other YouTube “sensations” that have found fame through the site. (Well, I guess their slogan-thingy is “broadcast yourself.”)

I should know how these wanna-be sensations feel: I used to be one of them.

Yes, I know it’s shocking; Meg had YouTube videos as an attempt to draw viewers and popularity. Well let me tell you–it didn’t last long. Probably because (1) I’m not funny, (2) the camera hates me with a firey and burning passion, and (3) I don’t write or talk about interesting things. Ever.

One day I finally realized that posting videos about myself was only causing me harm, since I became slightly less happy every time my videos didn’t get more than ten, fifteen, maybe even twenty views worldwide. One day I just went and deleted them all. So if you were thinking this whole time that you were going to go here, and watch my terrible videos about nothing, then too bad. Only I now have access to them. Heehee.

But, as I mentioned before, there are a few descent vloggers out there, and even a few descent singers. I’m not going to show you the singers, because they annoy me to an extremely high and unreadable degree. But I will give you a list of the vloggers that I have subscriptions to, and who make me laugh every time they post (meaning, of course, that they’re good.)

JanksterProductions – Pretty much the type of funny I wish I could be in a nutshell. (AND she has the new YouTube channel format, which I’m totally going to update on my profile when I’m done here.)

AwesomeSisterhood – Closely related to JanksterProductions in the funny category, but the fun of two friends vlogging back-and-forth as a way to communicate…and entertain their audience. (They have the old channel format, the one I won’t have in about half an hour.)

I totally know you were expecting more, but those are the only good ones I’ve found so far. I’ll keep you posted, though. Get it? Posted? Never mind.

That’s pretty much all I have for you today. Sometime in the near future, I’ll post about my July 4th experiences, which are likely to be interesting. They always are.

Have a safe and rain-free day! And, remember: if you want to make a fool of yourself, record yourself singing Demi Lavato songs and post it on the web, because no one can sing like Demi (her new CD comes out on the 21st, MY BIRTHDAY!). Anyone who tries will always fail.

Love&hugs, Meg♥
