Feel Like You’re Not Actually Getting Any Writing Done? Try This.

I, like many of you, used to feel guilty when I didn’t write.

Years of experience have taught me how to accept that sometimes, writing doesn’t get done and that’s OK.

Instead, I am constantly plagued by a different kind of guilt: not feeling like I’m writing ENOUGH.

I’m used to writing short — and let’s be honest, sometimes not very in-depth — posts and articles. I can get multiple done per day, check a dozen things off my list, and it’s fine. It’s a little different switching from freelancing to staff writing. Assignments take much longer and involve a LOT more research.

I’ll get about one piece of writing done in a single work day. Which is still a great accomplishment …

It just FEELS like I’m falling behind.

But I’ve started doing something that has really helped ease my writing guilt, and I hope it can help you overcome yours, too.

At the end of every day, make a list of:

  • What you got done today (writing)
  • What you didn’t get done, and why
  • What you want to get done tomorrow.

This way you can be proud of what you accomplished, “forgive yourself” for the things you didn’t finish, and plan for another productive day tomorrow.

It helps to look at this list and say to yourself, “Wow. I did actually get some things done today, even though it doesn’t feel like it. Also, it’s OK that I didn’t get this thing done because it’s not even due for another week. But I can start working on this part of it tomorrow. That works.”

Sometimes, visualizing what’s difficult to lay out in your head can make all the difference.

Thanks for reminding me to forgive myself. This week has been more tiring than usual for me and it feels nice to remember that everyone fails and that we must forgive ourselves. I rarely do it. But I will. Haha

You are correct – everyone falls short of their own expectations! But I wouldn’t call it ‘failing’ necessarily. More like, didn’t quite get to where you wanted to be this time, but there’s hope for improvement next time. haha :)

haha much more optimistic. I like it.

:) I mean “I’ve failed” just feels so much worse than it actually is.

        It does. You’re totally right.

Yeah I beat myself up a lot if I don’t write whenever I get the itch lol

Well stop that :) We all have those moments though. I’m behind on so many projects right now…does it feel great? Nope. But do you know what? It’s going to get done when it gets done. I know I’ll enjoy it much more if I take my time. With some things, at least. That’s not to say you should never push yourself. You just don’t -always- have to.

I’m working on it :-) I didn’t publish today but didn’t feel so bad because I spent a few hours redesigning my blog.

I remembered what you said and told myself “meh… I’ve posted more this week than I normally do plus I’m still working on something blog related. I can forgive myself.”

It made a world of difference

That is so good to hear. :) I didn’t do any work yesterday, it felt pretty awful. But I had a great day and eventually I just accepted that I’d get it done today and it would be OK. And it was! Sometimes you have to still consider that a victory anyway.

Absolutely! I’m working on a review and I’m going to schedule it to post tomorrow because later tonight the 20th season of SNAPPED starts and there’s no way I’m gonna miss that lol. It’s my treat to myself for a hard week of blogging :-) It’s always nice to treat yourself even for small victories. It’s a great way to stay motivated on the days you’re not feeling so awesome.

Absolutely. Rewarding myself with a good old-fashioned Disney mini-marathon on Friday nights always works. :)

It’s great but kinda sad, kinda like The Lion King. You should definitely check it out and let me know what you think.

Netflix only has the sequel?? Lame. Haha I will still get around to watching it though – I’ve been meaning to! I’ll let you know my reactions haha.

Yeah Netflix sucks sometimes haha. I’m afraid to watch the sequel. I’m afraid they ruined the name lol
